Ulster College of Music
Ulster College of Music

The Ulster College of Music is a registered charity founded by Miss Daphne Bell M.B.E.

The aim of the College is to provide the highest quality musical tuition to the whole community and to further the enjoyment of participating in musical events and activities.

Most tuition is on a one to one basis and the majority of students attend lessons weekly.  In general lessons last for 30 minutes although longer lessons are available by arrangement.

Individual tuition is available for students of 7 years and over (there is no upper age limit) and all levels are catered for from beginner to Diploma standard.

All tutors are highly qualified professional musicians and many are well known solo performers and Ulster Orchestra players.

The College has an eclectic approach to the range of tuition which it offers. Although formerly best known as a school of lassical music, the College , in addition, now offers lessons in Rock, Jazz and Music Theatre.

Theory classes to Grade 5 standard are offered to all students for a small fee and classes are held in senior theory, including Diploma and G.C.S.E.

Although many students opt to take examinations these are not seen as the major goal of the College.  Rather students are encouraged to enjoy performing regardless of their level of expertise.

For student taking examinations above Grade 4 standard separate aural classes are arranged.  Also, an official accompanist is provided for singers and players of orchestral instruments.

The standard of tuition is reflected in the excellent examination results which are regularly achieved by students many of whom pursue musical careers either as teachers or performers. Other past students continue to enjoy their music as a major means of relaxation.

Classes for younger students are held on Saturday mornings when children from 5 years old learn basic musical skills and concepts through fun activities  (see Junior leaflet)

The College is open six days per week and is situated in pleasant surroundings with some car parking space.

Application forms are available from the College office which is open on week days from 2.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. and on Saturdays  from 9.00 a.m. to 4.p.m.
