Between 10am & 1pm on a Saturday the Ulster College of Music offers a “Drop-in” Music Theory Class designed to allow students to reach a Grade 5 standard at their own pace.
The UCM places great importance on students developing an understanding and awareness of music, to match their technical prowess. With this in mind, a class was created to maximize resources, whilst offering great flexibility & value for money.
In this relaxed atmosphere students have the opportunity to choose a schedule, a grade and even a syllabus. The traditional ABRSM syllabus is offered for a classical music theory education. For those who prefer rock, pop, jazz or blues, the equal and alternative syllabus- “Popular Music Theory” by The London College of Music is also available.
Students are required to bring a workbook through which they can progress. The teacher circulates, helping where needed or requested. Within this system, students have the opportunity to receive one to one attention at their own level and in their own time. A common problem may result in a short lesson delivered from the front.
Music theory is so much more than “dots on a page” or “a bit like maths” – it is the alphabet and the language of music. Learn the language and you can not only read with more accuracy and understand with greater depth, but you can then begin to speak the language yourself- enhancing your own artistic communication!
Grade 6 through to Diploma level theory is also available, as individual lessons.
From September 2011 Music Theory Group Classes will be taken by Garvin Clements and the UCM welcomes his extensive experience and enthusiastic approach to Music Theory tuition.
These classes are always very popular amd if interested contact the College Office via info@theucm.com
